Allarme rosso in Europa per i celiaci: l’Unione Europea, infatti, ha recentemente proposto una modifica al regolamento sull’etichettatura dei prodotti, con cui si vorrebbe abrogare il Regolamento relativo alla composizione e all'etichettatura dei prodotti alimentari adatti alle persone intolleranti al glutine (Reg. 41/2009). Ciò avrebbe l’effetto di “declassare” la sicurezza e la scientificità della dicitura “senza glutine” portandola al pari di altri “claim” come ad esempio “senza coloranti” o “a basso contenuto di grassi”.Per le persone intolleranti al glutine, che sono l’1% della popolazione europea, e che in alcuni Stati, come la Finlandia, arrivano ad essere il 2,7 %, non si tratta di diete o di modi salutari di vivere, ma di una terapia! La celiachia infatti è una patologia che richiede, come unica terapia a oggi conosciuta, l’adesione a una dieta che escluda completamente il glutine per tutta la vita. L’assunzione di glutine espone i celiaci a gravissime complicanze, anche irreversibili, tanto che la legge in Italia, che è molto avanzata, (L. 123/05) favorisce la diagnosi precoce.

L’intervento della Commissione Europea rischia di rendere vano quanto fatto fino a oggi a favore dei celiaci perché abolendo la categoria degli alimenti dietetici, con la proposta che diventino alimenti di consumo corrente, rimuove la speciale protezione riservata ai celiaci garantita da una normativa stringente sui requisiti nutrizionali specifici e sui controlli relativi.

Proprio su questo tema l’onorevole Patrizia Toia ha promosso un incontro che si è svolto oggi al Parlamento europeo di Strasburgo e che ha visto riuniti professori, come Catassi (professore di Pediatria Generale e Specialistica U. Politecnica delle Marche – Co-director Center for Celiac Research University of Maryland Baltimore), associazioni che si occupano d celiachia, rappresentate anche da Caterina Pilo DG dell’Associazione Italiana Celiachia, esperti di nutrizione e molti deputati dei vari Paesi europei. I deputati presenti si sono impegnati per salvaguardare i celiaci e le etichette.
